Travel is one of my great loves. Discovering beautiful and fascinating new places, learning about a new culture and discovering a million little granules of knowledge that you’d never have acquired at home – these are just a few of the reasons why I love exploring the world. Travelling with kids makes that experience even richer.
I know plenty of people who try and get as much travelling out of their system as possible before embarking on the grand adventure that is raising a family. Don’t get me wrong – I think it’s wise to make the most of your travel time just for two. There is no reason though why you cannot continue your adventures with children as well – you just might need to approach them in a slightly new way. Besides, as parents we are encouraged to expose our children to as many new experiences as possible and what better way to do this than to show them the world through the lens of another place and culture? That’s my philosophy anyway!
This autumn Olympia in London is playing host to the first ever UK Family Travel Show. If you are looking for inspiration for a dream family holiday, seeking practical advice on how to live the travelling dream with kids too or are perhaps ready to book a new adventure and take advantage of some show-only offers, then the Family Travel Show is for you.
The show runs from 31st October to 1st November and will be packed full of specialist family holiday travel providers and experts on hand to help answer any questions on the practical side of things. I particularly like the sound of the ‘Parent Daringly and Travel’ talk by Melanie Gow and could have done with being able to hear the tips from National Geographic Traveller on stress-free travel with kids before our upcoming US trip – I’m optimistically packing the girls’ activity bags today! There are also talks on capturing great travel photography and even on climbing Kilimanjaro with your teenagers!
The Family Travel Show will also be hosting an exhibition of short-listed photographs from the Young Travel Photographers competition. Some of the entries so far are pretty impressive. If you have a budding young photographer in the family who likes to snap away on holiday then take a look – it’s open to different age categories up to 17 years old and prizes include a Panasonic A100 Wearable Camera and a £150 CEWE photobook voucher. The Young Travel Photographers competition is open until 14th October.
I would love to say I will see you at the show but I’m afraid I can’t make it this time. My excuse? I’ll be in California indulging in a bit of family travel myself! Next time…

Our dream family trip: at the moment I think Kyushu and Okinawa, Japan will be our next destination. Once E is a bit bigger I have Sichuan and Yunnan, China in my sights. Maybe at 4 or 5. And when she’s older primary age the pyramids and a safari (different trips!)
Would love to go to Australia and see all my family. Via Japan and Dubai 🙂
I would love to tour the US
I would love to take my boys to Costa Rica to visit the rainforest and then relax on the stunning beaches.
Would love to tour America!
